The civil rights movement in America was between 1955-1968 there was many movements that fought and focused to stop racial discrimination and to get black people the right to vote .
Rosa Parks
On 1 st December,1955 in Montgomery ,Alabama, parks age 42, refused to obey a bus driver order that she had to give up her seat to make room for a white passenger .Her action was the first of its kind .Parks was arrested and convicted for disorderly conduct. when word of this incident reached the black community the African-American leaders organised the Montgomery Bus Boycott to demand equality on the public transport. she is now known as the mother of modern day civil rights movement.
Civil rights act of 1964
Although President Kennedy had proposed to bring in civil rights it was not him who signed the 1964 act instead it was President Johnson the act banned discrimination based on race , colour and religion .
Dr Martin Luther king
Martin Luther king was a baptist minister and also a civil activist who fought for the rights of black people of America . In 1963 , king led a mass protests against discrimination in Birmingham. King participated in an enormous civil right march in Washington in 1963 , and delivered his famous speech , predicting a day when the promise of freedom and equality for all in America .On December 10,1964 Dr.Martin.Luther.King was awarded the Nobel peace prize for his work .
I have a Dream
I have a dream was a popular speech that Martin Luther King gave, were he called for racial equality and the end of discrimination. Kings delivery of this speech from the steps of the Lincoln memorial was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement .

Why did the civil rights movement start in Northern Ireland?
Following from the civil right movement in America many Catholics in Northern Ireland started campaigning for social and political equality in the late 60s. Below is a short clips showing what a march was like ?
The First civil rights March
The first Civil rights march was in 1968 when the Northern Ireland civil rights association held a rally at the banning of a Republican Easter parade . This parade was held from Coalisland to Dungannon in county Tyrone.

The Derry March
The city of Derry in Northern Ireland took the leading role in the civil rights movement.The Derry March was in September Nicra organised a march to be held on 5 October 1968. On the 1st of October the apprentice boys of Derry announced their intention to march on the same day and time . They were attacked by the Royal Ulster Constabulary .Including the west Belfast MP Gerry fitt.
Bloody Sunday
Bloody Sunday was a incident that happened on the 30th January 1972 in the bogside area of Derry City that cost the lives of Fourteen civil rights protesters mostly teenagers they were killed immediately .They were shot by the British parachute regiment this was during a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march . The March was held to protest against interment .They even in 2002 made a film on Bloody Sunday .
